Introduction Of Carbides

Calcium carbide (CaC2, commonly known as calcium carbide), chromium carbide (Cr4C3), tantalum carbide (TaC), vanadium carbide (VC), zirconium carbide (ZrC), and tungsten carbide (WC) (Figure: jewelry) are all metal carbides. Boron carbide (B4C), silicon carbide (SiC) and the like belong to non-metallic carbides.

From the carbide bond type is divided into ionic carbides, covalent carbides and interstitial carbides.

Ionic carbides, such as calcium carbide, tantalum carbide, etc.

There are three kinds of carbon ions: C(4-), C2(2-), and C3(4-). C(4-) reacts with water to form methane; C2(2-) reacts with water to form acetylene; C3 (4-) Only magnesium carbide (Mg2C3) is currently produced, and it reacts with water to form a propadiene.

Covalent carbides, such as silicon carbide, boron carbide, etc., are atomic crystals, neither with water nor with nitric acid, and have a high hardness, and can be used as abrasive powders and refractories. As for methane and other hydrocarbons, their crystals are molecular crystals, which are already organic compounds and are usually not included in carbides.
